Oberammergau 2010 Passion Play

In 2010, the local inhabitants of the Bavarian village of Oberammergau will once again take to the stage to perform the most famous of all Passion Plays. Combine a stay in the spectacular Austrian Tyrol with two nights in the Ammergau Alps Region near Oberammergau, and experience this historical Christian event.

In 1633, during the Thirty Years' War, the plague caused many deaths in and around Oberammergau. The surviving population of the village vowed, if they were saved from extinction, to perform a play of  "suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. From that day on, no further Black Deaths were recorded.

In 1634, they kept their promised for the first time, and in 2010 they will perform this most famous Passion Play for the 41st time. In 1674, it was decided to hold the play at the beginning of each decade, and from 1680 until 2000 the play has been performed in almost unbroken sequence. Cancellations during wartime were replaced by additional performances, such as those in 1984, which marked the play's 350th anniversary.

More than 2000 adults, musicians and backstage technicians are involved in performing the play and in some scenes, there are up to 600 players on stage. No makeup, wigs or false beards are permitted and only local villagers may take part in the performances.

Over 100 performances will be held from the 15th May to the 3rd October and up to 500,000 visitors, from all over the globe, are expected to visit Oberammergau in 2010.
